WTA Roundup: Raducanu Upset in Singapore, Kalinskaya and Cirstea Advance

Singapore Tennis Open
Cristina Bucsa of Spain pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat seventh-seeded Emma Raducanu of Great Britain in the first round of the Singapore Tennis Open on Monday. Bucsa secured the victory in a grueling three-hour match, edging Raducanu 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, displayed flashes of brilliance with seven aces but also struggled with consistency, committing seven double faults. Despite winning the first set, she was unable to maintain momentum as Bucsa broke her serve three times in the second set and four times in the third. The match was decided by the narrowest of margins, with Bucsa claiming one more point overall than Raducanu (119-118).

Top-seeded Anna Kalinskaya of Russia was also tested in her opening-round match against American Caroline Dolehide but emerged victorious 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Kalinskaya capitalized on Dolehide’s errors in the final set to seal the win.

Sixth seed Camila Osorio of Colombia endured a hard-fought battle to overcome Bernarda Pera of the United States 6-1, 6-7 (0), 6-3. Other first-round winners included Simona Waltert (Switzerland), Dominika Salkova (Czech Republic), Mananchaya Sawangkaew (Thailand), Maya Joint (Australia), and Ann Li (United States).

Upper Austria Ladies Linz
In Linz, Austria, Romania’s Sorana Cirstea delivered a strong comeback performance to defeat Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz tournament. Despite not serving any aces, Cirstea capitalized on Rus’ eight double faults and overcame a resilient opponent who saved 15 of 19 break points. Cirstea’s dominance on her first serve in the third set (winning 14 of 17 points) proved to be the difference.

In another main-draw match, Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria edged Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7-6 (7), 6-4 to advance to the next round.

As the tournaments progress, fans can look forward to more thrilling matchups in Singapore and Linz, showcasing the competitive spirit of the WTA circuit.
