Mets to Retire David Wright’s No. 5, Induct Him into Team Hall of Fame

The New York Mets announced on Monday that they will honor franchise legend and former captain David Wright by retiring his iconic No. 5 jersey and inducting him into the Mets Hall of Fame. The celebration will take place during a special ceremony on July 19, prior to their game against the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field. This date is nearly 21 years to the day after Wright made his Major League debut.

David Wright’s Stellar Career

Wright, now 42, spent his entire 14-season career with the Mets, earning a reputation as one of the greatest players in franchise history. He batted an impressive .296 with 242 home runs and 970 RBIs, while also showcasing stellar defense at third base, earning him two Gold Gloves. A seven-time All-Star, Wright was a cornerstone for the team both on and off the field.

In a statement expressing his gratitude, Wright said, “Excited, humbled, honored are just some of the words to describe the thought of this summer’s Mets Hall of Fame induction and seeing #5 up at Citi Field next to some of the best players to ever play the game.”

Draft and Legacy

The Mets selected Wright as the 38th overall pick in the 2001 MLB Draft, and he quickly rose through the ranks to make his debut on July 21, 2004, against the Montreal Expos. Over the years, he became a fan favorite and a symbol of loyalty and excellence, embodying the spirit of the Mets franchise.

Wright’s career, while cut short by injuries, remains one of the most celebrated in Mets history. His contributions to the team will now be immortalized at Citi Field, alongside other Mets legends.

Fans are eagerly anticipating this summer’s ceremony, which will pay tribute to the man often referred to as “Captain America” for his leadership and contributions to the sport.
