Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Still in Concussion Protocol Ahead of NFC Wild-Card Game

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts remains in concussion protocol following a head injury sustained on December 22 against the Washington Commanders. His availability for the NFC wild-card playoff matchup against the Green Bay Packers could remain uncertain until later in the week, according to head coach Nick Sirianni.

Current Status

Sirianni confirmed on Monday that there was “no new information” regarding Hurts’ recovery. The Eagles did not hold practices on Monday or Tuesday, meaning the next update on Hurts’ condition will come on Wednesday when the team begins postseason practices and releases its first injury report of the playoffs.

Hurts was listed as a nonparticipant in last week’s injury and practice report. Even if healthy, he likely would have been held out of the Eagles’ regular-season finale to prioritize his recovery.

Hurts’ Season and Past Performance

Hurts has been pivotal to the Eagles’ success this season, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities. In Week 1, he played a crucial role in the Eagles’ 28-24 win over the Packers in Brazil, completing 20 of 34 passes for 278 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Sirianni declined to confirm whether Hurts has been involved in team meetings or film study during his recovery.

Backup Quarterback Situation

Rookie quarterback Tanner McKee started in the Eagles’ Week 18 victory over the New York Giants, completing 27 of 41 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns without any turnovers. McKee’s strong performance has sparked speculation about his position on the depth chart, potentially moving ahead of Kenny Pickett as the backup quarterback.

“We have a lot of confidence in both guys,” Sirianni said, refusing to declare a definitive QB2.

Team Adjustments

Key starters, including running back Saquon Barkley, wide receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith, and offensive linemen Landon Dickerson, Lane Johnson, and Jordan Mailata, were also inactive for the regular-season finale. Their return for the playoffs is expected to bolster the team, regardless of who starts at quarterback.

The Eagles face a critical decision this week as they prepare for their playoff opener. While Hurts remains their preferred starter, the team must balance his long-term health with the immediate challenge of a postseason run.
