Nick Kyrgios Claims Tennis is ‘Bland’ Post-Federer and Nadal Era, Criticizes Player Friendships
Nick Kyrgios, the outspoken Australian tennis star, is set to make his comeback at the Brisbane Open next month, but before he steps back onto the court, he’s already taking shots at the current state of the game.
The 29-year-old, who has been sidelined due to injury, expressed his belief that tennis has become a bit dull in the post-Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal era. Kyrgios also voiced his frustration with the growing camaraderie among players, saying he dislikes the fact that many of them are too friendly with each other.
In an interview on Nova 100’s Jase and Lauren radio show, Kyrgios said, “I think it’s a very interesting time at the moment in the tennis world. Obviously, we see Djokovic, I think we could all say he’s at the tail end of his career. He’s still a phenomenal player. But Nadal, literally, today, officially, his last ever time we’re going to see him on the court. Federer is gone. So look, there’s some amazing players still out there, but I think the game’s a bit bland at the moment.”
Kyrgios, never one to mince words, also shared his disdain for the increasing friendship among players. “Everyone’s liking each other, and everyone’s friends with each other. And I just, I hate that s**t, to be honest. Everyone’s everyone’s best mate,” he added.
