MLB teams compete to sign Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki

MLB Teams, Including Dodgers, Pursue Japanese Pitching Sensation Roki Sasaki

The Los Angeles Dodgers, reigning world champions, are reportedly among several MLB teams vying for Japanese star pitcher Roki Sasaki. The Dodgers recently met with the 23-year-old right-hander, who was officially posted by the Chiba Lotte Marines earlier this month during baseball’s winter meetings, as reported by The Orange County Register.

A Growing List of Suitors

The Dodgers join an impressive roster of teams believed to have met with Sasaki, including the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, and potentially the San Diego Padres. Sasaki is expected to finalize his MLB destination shortly after the 2025 international signing period opens on January 15.

Contract Constraints

While Sasaki’s talent positions him as a marquee addition, MLB rules limit his earning potential due to his age and experience. Foreign players under 25 years old with fewer than six years of professional experience are subject to restrictions on contract size. As such, Sasaki won’t command a deal similar to Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s record-breaking 12-year, $325 million contract with the Dodgers last December.

A Phenomenal Young Talent

Sasaki is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young pitchers in the world. Known for his 100 mph fastball, devastating sinker, and improved slider, Sasaki’s stats with the Marines are remarkable. In the 2024 season, he posted a 10-5 record with a 2.35 ERA, 129 strikeouts, and 32 walks in 111 innings. Over four professional seasons, Sasaki has accumulated a 29-15 record, a 2.10 ERA, 505 strikeouts, and 88 walks across 394 2/3 innings.

High Praise from MLB Executives

Dodgers president Andrew Friedman lauded Sasaki’s potential, describing him as a physical talent with elite pitches. “He’s incredibly talented. His fastball carries well, his splitter is a well-above-average pitch, and he’s developed a strong slider. He has the drive to be the best pitcher in the world, and we believe he has the capability to achieve that,” Friedman said.

Giants president Buster Posey was equally enthusiastic, calling Sasaki a “tremendous talent” and imagining him as a transformative addition to the Giants’ rotation. “Not too many arms in the world like his. At 23 years old, he’s a dream player to add,” Posey remarked.

What’s Next for Sasaki?

As the international signing period approaches, Sasaki’s decision is expected to make waves across MLB. Teams will be eager to add his rare blend of youth, velocity, and control, envisioning him as a cornerstone for years to come.
