Polish Tennis Star Iga Świątek Accepts One-Month Suspension Over Banned Substance
Polish tennis icon and five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Świątek has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for a prohibited substance, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Thursday.
The substance in question, trimetazidine, was detected during routine testing. The ITIA determined Świątek’s level of fault was minimal, stating, “The level of fault was considered at the lowest end of the range for ‘No Significant Fault or Negligence.’”
According to the ITIA, the positive test resulted from contamination of a regulated, non-prescription sleep aid, melatonin, which Świątek had been using to manage jet lag. The ITIA emphasized that the violation was not intentional.
Świątek accepted the suspension offered on November 27. Since she was provisionally suspended between September 22 and October 4—missing three tournaments—only eight days remain on her sanction. Additionally, Świątek forfeited her prize money from the Cincinnati Open, the event directly following the positive test.
What is Trimetazidine?
Trimetazidine, classified as a “metabolic modulator,” is banned in sports as it can enhance endurance. Unlike stimulants that raise heart rates, it may improve physical performance by optimizing energy use during exertion.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed it is reviewing the ITIA’s decision and reserves the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Świątek’s Reaction
Świątek expressed shock and anxiety upon learning of the positive result. In a heartfelt video shared on social media, the 23-year-old said:
“It was a blow for me; I was shocked. This situation made me very anxious. At first, I couldn’t understand how this was possible.”
She explained that extensive testing revealed contamination in the melatonin she had been using for sleep. Świątek described the ordeal as the most challenging experience of her life, marked by sleepless nights and emotional distress.
“Returning to training after this situation nearly broke my heart. There were many tears and sleepless nights. The worst part was the uncertainty.”
Świątek also thanked her fans for their unwavering support, adding that the experience has been a profound learning moment.
Support from the Tennis Community
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) issued a statement expressing its full support for Świątek, commending her commitment to clean sport:
“Iga has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to fair play. This unfortunate incident highlights the challenges athletes face in navigating medications and supplements.”
The WTA reiterated its dedication to clean sport and stressed the importance of athletes ensuring all products they use comply with regulations to avoid unintentional exposure to banned substances.
A Legacy Untarnished
Świątek’s career achievements include four French Open titles and a US Open victory in 2022. While this incident has been a challenging chapter, Świątek’s commitment to clean sport and her transparency throughout the process have maintained her integrity as a champion.
