Kasparas Jakucionis Declares for 2025 NBA Draft After Standout Freshman Year at Illinois

Illinois freshman point guard Kasparas Jakucionis has officially thrown his name into the ring for the 2025 NBA Draft, making the announcement on Monday. The highly touted 6-foot-6 Lithuanian guard is projected to be a top-10 pick, capping off a memorable freshman season that firmly placed him on the radar of scouts and fans alike.

Jakucionis quickly made his presence felt in Champaign, averaging 15 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists across 33 starts for the Fighting Illini. Known for his size, vision, and feel for the game, he was often tasked with running the offense while also taking on scoring duties. His versatility on both ends of the floor made him one of the most exciting young prospects in the country.

Speaking with ESPN, Jakucionis reflected on the decision with a mix of excitement and gratitude. “I’ve waited for this moment a long time,” he said. “Saying goodbye to Illinois will be the hardest part. I’ve made real friendships and built meaningful relationships with the players, coaches, and everyone involved with the program. I’ll always carry that with me.”

While Jakucionis’s upside is undeniable, his game isn’t without flaws. He struggled with turnovers, averaging 3.6 per game — the highest in the Big Ten. Still, many scouts view that as a fixable part of his development, especially given his youth and willingness to improve. His shooting was serviceable, connecting on 31.8% from beyond the arc and an impressive 84.5% from the free-throw line — a strong indicator of shooting touch.

His size and skill set have many NBA teams viewing him as a potential combo guard who can contribute in multiple backcourt roles. Whether he plays on the ball or off, his feel for the game and poise under pressure have fueled his rise up draft boards throughout the season.

Meanwhile, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood may not be done seeing players enter the draft. Freshman forward Will Riley — another standout — has yet to announce his decision. The 19-year-old Canadian closed the season on a high note and is reportedly projected as a potential top-20 pick if he decides to declare for the June 25–26 draft.

If Jakucionis does go in the lottery, he’ll become Illinois’ first lottery pick in over a decade. The last was big man Meyers Leonard, who was taken 11th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2012.

As Jakucionis begins preparing for the pre-draft process, Illini fans will be watching with pride — and perhaps a bit of nostalgia — as their star guard takes the next step toward fulfilling his NBA dream.
